SMART-CARE is a Heidelberg-based research consortium that aims to develop innovative proteomic and metabolomics tools to detect, model and predict cancer recurrence. Cancer recurrence is a major global health problem and the main determinant of cancer-related death. Yet, no accurate predictors exist that indicate disease progression in individual patients to prompt therapy in a timely manner. The aim of SMART-CARE is to develop mass spectrometric methodologies in a systems-medicine approach to identify molecular markers that indicate tumor relapse in cancers of the lung, brain, blood and in sarcomas. By combining expertise in clinical oncology, pathology, mass spectrometry, artificial intelligence and data modeling, SMART-CARE aims to deliver better treatment options for cancer patients.
